First Chapter ~
From whence they came: October 30, 1980
Young Eric Beckwith could hear the clack, clack of her heels on the tile floors in the kitchen as she paced back and forth monitoring the chicken Parmesan in oven to make sure it didn’t burn. The smell of marinara, cheese, and meat wafted on currents of warmth emitting from the avocado green oven. Eric didn’t even have to take his eyes off the nature show on elephants he was watching on the television box to know that his mother was pacing with her arms folded over her narrow frame. Tiny wrinkles in her forehead determine not to fail herself, fail her sons. If the food burnt even a little there would be hell to pay.
This hell probably worse than other days. Her husband, Carson, would not be in a good mood soon anyway. They were expecting a follow-up phone call about the health of the twins: Lyle and Luke. Ever since they were born two years earlier, June, knew her sons were different. Too quiet. Too withdrawn. Too much of a target for a father who would grow increasingly antagonistic towards the boys if he could not use them to get a leg up in life. She feared the pressure he’d would put on Eric once that phone rang. Eric would no longer be his son, he would be the meal ticket. Could she let that happen? She wondered if she had already let too much happen.
Ding. The oven timer shook her from her thoughts. She shoved her hands into the oven mitts positioned perfectly on the stove for quick entry and pulled the hot baking dish out. She could hear the bubbling under the foil lid she had wrapped over the top of the dish. She removed the foil. A face full of hot steam hot her face. Staring at the chicken Parmesan as if she could see straight to the bottom she grabbed a spoon dig it all the way to the bottom of the red bubbling liquid and lifted up a piece of chicken. Golden brown. Oh sweet Jesus, merciful Savior. Thank you. She breathed a heavy sigh of relief. Tears burning her eyes.
Eric’s ears could hear things others couldn’t. Professorial listening. He could hear the mailman driving up to their neighborhood before his mail truck even reached their block. He could hear the scream of the little girl who fell and scraped her knee playing outside seconds before she had even tripped. He could hear when a raccoon was peering at their garbage cans in the backyard. Knew when she was there. Could almost smell her before she made her presence know using a black paw to lift the metal kin with a clink and shove her intrusive little nose in for discarded food. He could hear June wiping away her tears of nervous relief as she often did when she did well enough – according to his father’s standards – to avoid a beating. The phone? It was ringing. Oh wait…not yet. Eric had to remind himself. Not yet was it ringing for the others. Others…not like me….Continue reading “Beware Because The Beckwith Brothers Are Coming Home! ~ Enjoy Book #CoverReveal & First Chapter Excerpt of YA/Thriller Debut, #TheBeckwithBrothers!”
