Book Cover Reveal & Excerpt

I am Ivana Sanders a Book Blogger, Book Trailer Creator, Host if Author Interview Instagram LIVE Series, and Debut Author! Today I am thrilled to share the cover and preview an excerpt from The Beckwith Brothers, my debut Young Adult Thriller novel!

Short Description of The Beckwith Brothers:

Teen Angst, Forbidden Romance, Secret Societies, and Murder all intertwine when Three (3) Mysterious Brothers return home to their small town Halloween night 1995.

First Chapter ~

From whence they came: October 30, 1980

Young Eric Beckwith could hear the clack, clack of her heels on the tile floors in the kitchen as she paced back and forth monitoring the chicken Parmesan in oven to make sure it didn’t burn. The smell of marinara, cheese, and meat wafted on currents of warmth emitting from the avocado green oven. Eric didn’t even have to take his eyes off the nature show on elephants he was watching on the television box to know that his mother was pacing with her arms folded over her narrow frame. Tiny wrinkles in her forehead determine not to fail herself, fail her sons. If the food burnt even a little there would be hell to pay.

This hell probably worse than other days. Her husband, Carson, would not be in a good mood soon anyway. They were expecting a follow-up phone call about the health of the twins: Lyle and Luke. Ever since they were born two years earlier, June, knew her sons were different. Too quiet. Too withdrawn. Too much of a target for a father who would grow increasingly antagonistic towards the boys if he could not use them to get a leg up in life. She feared the pressure he’d would put on Eric once that phone rang. Eric would no longer be his son, he would be the meal ticket. Could she let that happen? She wondered if she had already let too much happen.

Ding. The oven timer shook her from her thoughts. She shoved her hands into the oven mitts positioned perfectly on the stove for quick entry and pulled the hot baking dish out.  She could hear the bubbling under the foil lid she had wrapped over the top of the dish. She removed the foil. A face full of hot steam hot her face. Staring at the chicken Parmesan as if she could see straight to the bottom she grabbed a spoon dig it all the way to the bottom of the red bubbling liquid and lifted up a piece of chicken. Golden brown. Oh sweet Jesus, merciful Savior. Thank you. She breathed a heavy sigh of relief. Tears burning her eyes.

Eric’s ears could hear things others couldn’t. Professorial listening. He could hear the mailman driving up to their neighborhood before his mail truck even reached their block. He could hear the scream of the little girl who fell and scraped her knee playing outside seconds before she had even tripped. He could hear when a raccoon was peering at their garbage cans in the backyard. Knew when she was there. Could almost smell her before she made her presence know using a black paw to lift the metal kin with a clink and shove her intrusive little nose in for discarded food. He could hear June wiping away her tears of nervous relief as she often did when she did well enough – according to his father’s standards –  to avoid a beating. The phone? It was ringing. Oh wait…not yet. Eric had to remind himself. Not yet was it ringing for the others. Others…not like me….

The Beckwith Brothers (Official #BookTrailer) is LIVE & the Tour is Coming Soon!!! #Roaring20sDebut #YA #Thriller #Mystery #BookBlogger #TheBoysAreComingHome 🐺🖤

✨It’s Here!! The Official Book Trailer of my debut YA/Thriller, The Beckwith Brothers, with a Dream Cast/Soundtrack/Takeaway Quotes is LIVE! 🐺🖤⤵️✨

As I organize the extensive publicity tour for my debut novel, The Beckwith Brothers, there will be giveaways, magazine features, and podcast interviews about this story of Innocence & Mystery!

Short Description of The Beckwith Brothers:

Teen Angst, Forbidden Romance, Secret Societies, and Murder all intertwine when Three (3) Mysterious Brothers return home to their small town Halloween night 1995.

Long Description:

At one point everyone who lived and eventually was murder in Downers Grove thought it seemed easy to exist and breathe in a beautiful place where nothing even remotely bad ever happened…not since The Beckwith Brothers went missing in the wooded mountains just outside of city limits fifteen years ago. The year is 1995, Seraphim ‘Sierr’ Blake is a 17-year-old odd beauty who is awkward, lean, and lanky and she’s all too aware of it. Despite her inner and subtle outer beauty her confidence is barely there. Her drive comes from her thirst for the life of her dreams which she is determined to work hard and pray even harder to reach. She is a film producer, bestselling author, and happily married wife to the best husband who she is madly in love with 20 years from now in her own mind. Currently as an insecure teen with a super confident peers, Sierr is surrounded by her close knit group of distinctive childhood friends: Fierce Fashionista Willow, Girly Girl Carmen Cameron, and the Forever Skeptical Likable Loner who only goes by the initials of his name, JSF. They all live in a seemingly quaint and quirky small town in Northern California called Downers Grove…A place steeped in secrets.

The Beckwith Brothers are rumored to have killed their own parents when they tried to abandon their children in the woods causing none of the Beckwith family to ever be seen again. These boys were a myth to the media and skeptics, legends to the intrigued and curious, foreign entities to be worshiped by a fringe group of outsiders, and a tool for the fame of a power hungry. However, when strange happenings start up just before the 15th Anniversary of The Beckwith Brothers’ mysterious disappearance the past intertwines into the present unearthing reserves of supernatural power, targeted obsession, forbidden romance, paranoia, and a string of murders all culminating with world changing events on Halloween night 1995. Leading up to the climatic events initiated by The Beckwith Brothers emergence from the forests, Sierr is thrust into the perfect storm of self-awareness, infatuation, temptation, and angst as she, her small town, and her friends find themselves battling high-school drama, predatory males, a violent secret society, serial killings, and being objects of twisted affections. All while learning that the truth can be really be stranger and more frightening than fiction. Including the truth about herself which is that she may just be a girl who loves playing with fire….especially when she knows the fire loves her back.

Forces beyond anything Sierr could have imagined are determining the conclusion of this story including the code of the wild where The Beckwith Brothers raised themselves. In an atmosphere where conspiracies run rampant, Downers Grove cannot anticipate the fallout when the myths, the legends, the fully grown boys finally….come home.

The Beckwith Brothers is a 130,000 word Young Adult Thriller novel set in the 1990s rich with visuals, nostalgia, and emotional depth of angsty teenagers navigating life, dreams, hurts, love, and death. Interspersed with Dark Humor, Mystery, and Suspense BEWARE because The Boys Are Coming Home! This story will be perfect for fans of There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins, The Lost Boys (1987), The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas, The Shadow and Bone Trilogy (A Demon in the Wood: A Darkling Prequel) by Leigh Bardugo, and Beauty and the Beast (1994).

The Beckwith Brothers is now being reviewed by a team of Fabulous Beta Readers, has slots to be featured on YA Book Central and Quiet YA Reads websites! More Book Trailers inspired by my Book are in the making! Also, The Beckwith Brothers blog tour is on it’s way too! So, Beware Because…The Boys Are Coming Home!! 🐺

My #BookReview of #ABurningSea by @TheodoreBrun @CorvusBooks #BlogTour by @AnneCater @RandomTTours #BlogTour #BookBlogger #WritingCommunity #HistoricalFiction

Read on for my Book Review of the epic, vivid, and so, so satisfying third installment of The Wandering Chronicles by Theodore Brun and Corvus/Atlantic Books!! Thank you so, so, soooooo much to Anne Cater and Kate at Corvus for the opportunity to participate in this wonderful book tour!! 🤗

Genre: Historical Fiction

Description: Doomed to wander. Destined for glory.

Erlan Aurvandil has turned his back on the past and his native Northern lands, taking a perilous journey to the greatest city in the world, Byzantium. But as his voyage ends, Erlan is brutally betrayed, captured and enslaved by a powerful Byzantine general.

Meanwhile, Lilla Sviggarsdottír, Queen of Svealand, has lost her husband and with him, her kingdom. Leaving her lands and people behind, Lilla journeys east on a new quest: to find Erlan and raise an army mighty enough to defeat her usurper.

But when she reaches the great city of Byzantium, she discovers a place in turmoil. A dark tide is rising against the Emperor from within his own court. As the shadows darken and whispers of war begin to strengthen, Erlan’s fate becomes intertwined with that of the city. Are they both doomed to fall, or can freedom be won in the blood of battle?

Publication Date: September 3, 2020

My Review ~

Flowing gracefully like a wave in a calm sea just after A Sacred Storm, A Burning Sea awakes with a daring and thunderous continuation of The Wandering Chronicles Series!

I am so thrilled to be on the tour for this incredible journey by author Theodore Brun. I have read both the first and second books in this series and this third installment is just as a enthralling and epic! We follow the emotional and physical and magical journey of Erlan the wounded and lost protagonist at the series and Lilla who seeks for the love she has found. As the fate of Historical Fiction would have it they end up in the mist of the Byzantium war.

While running from the troubles of his past, Erlan runs into a new chaotic trouble, imprisonment, and chaos that draws out the hero in some and the depths of the darkness in others.

Once again Theodore Brun has delivered a well executed story of perseverance, honor, blood, battle, love, loss, pain, gain, tragedy, and victory. We see the further development of our favorite characters from the series and some new all while receiving a satisfying taste of every flavor and personality depicted. This is an epic, high-stakes, vivid, and visual story which can even be read as a standalone! As a fan of the entire The Wandering Chronicles Series I am so happy to have this lovely addition to the collection!

I give A Burning Sea ✨✨✨✨✨ (five stars)!!!!

Takeaway Quotes:

  • “Erlan had left because he was a man of honor when honor was all he had left to him.”
  • “They were boys, good natured lads most of the time, with hardly sixteen winters behind them. And they already had innocent blood on their hands.”
  • “And rage bloomed inside him, wave after wave of it, tumbling over itself into an eruption like fire-mountains of old.”
  • “At least Lilla was where she was meant to be. While she was in the world, somehow there was hope.”
  • “When they lay together his skin was cold to the touch, like a wight’s – as he were half-dead already.”
  • “As for Erlan, he tried not to think about how every friend he ever made seemed to die. Except for his dog and this boy.”
  • “The Leather was coarse as bark. It came from a dark place, and carried with it a dark power.”
  • “In the north they called it the berserk madness. Yet, when it was on him, he felt there was was a beautiful clarity to it. Flesh and bone became a harvest to be reaped. Faces flashed for long enough only to be cut down. Fear became a palpable thing, a wave to ride, radiating out from him. He could not run. Nor could they. And so they fell under Wrathing’s thirsty edge. A Dozen. Fifteen. Maybe more. Dark faces. He heard a voice crying terrible curses, screaming to the Slain God to see his work. And then something changed. His own mind began to slip back into his head like a returning tide, and suddenly there was a man he had never seen before, cowering against the shear-strake.”
  • “His gaze was falling deep into hers, but he found himself afraid. He knew how he had been there before, had not forgotten the wound that the loss of her had scored into his heart.”
  • “The raiders raced on, blind to all danger, thirsty to breach the last barrier that held back the fury of ten thousand killers from the city.”
  • “Time was running out.”
  • “They were innocent. They were all innocent!”
  • “Run on, my son, my chosen son. Run on.” Then he disappeared inside…

“Be part of the solution and not the problem!”

Enjoy this Author Interview between The Novelette & Nikesha Elise Williams about her new book, Beyond Bourbon Street!

✨ Nikesha’s Bio Per Her Author Website ~ “I am a storyteller. There are many different ways to tell a story, but my preferred medium is through contemporary/literary fiction. In my novels, my focus is on the lives of Black women in all of their nuanced intricacies and various complexities. My sweet spot is at the intersection of race and gender in familial, communal, and cultural relationships. I am a Black woman. Writing about Black women. For Black women. This work has taken shape in my novels Four Women, The Appeal of Ebony Jones, Love Never Fails, Adulting, my poetry collection and one woman show, Lessons We Were Never Taught, and my forthcoming fifth novel Beyond Bourbon Street, which I will publish under my company — NEW Reads Publications — in August. In these novels I touch on various themes including domestic violence, addiction, the price of ambition on a Black woman’s life, and the health disparities Black women face within the medical system. Due to my background in journalism, and work for eleven years within the broadcast news industry, I have always been attuned to stories that were and were not covered in regards to Black women. Specifically, stories such as breast cancer rates, maternal death rates, infant mortality, stand your ground, police brutality, sexual assault, domestic violence and more. These issues, and many others like them, for the most part affect Black women at a deeper rate, higher statistical percentage, and at a cellular level that is rarely acknowledged or addressed in local or national media, or even within our own community. In my writing, it is my goal to take these issues and dissect them from the express viewpoint and perspective of Black women to end a cultural cycle of shame and silence when it comes to speaking up for Black women. However, my goal is not to write trauma or tragedy porn for the world to lament the burdens that Black women sometimes bear. As much as I shine a light on issues that are harmful to Black women, I also relish depicting and writing about Black women’s joy, laughter, friendships, relationships, and sexuality. In my work, I want to decapitate stereotypes and archetypes of “Mammy,” “Sassy Black Woman,” and “Strong Black Woman,” and replace them with the messiness and complexities that mirrors the real lives Black women actually lead. As I continue to develop as a literary artist, and a voice in the Black community, it is my goal to create a body of work that invalidates the perception that Black people, and Black women specifically, are a monolith. I want to continue to explore, detail, and record the experiences of all Black women, until their presence is widely recognized, their humanity promotes empathy, their place and right to be in the world is never questioned, and their story is universal.

My @BookishFirst #BookReview for #Sparrow by #MaryCeciliaJackson ✨ #WritingCommunity #ReadingCommunity #TheBoysAreComingHome

My BookishFirst review of Sparrow!

Genre: YA/Mystery

Blurb: In the tradition of Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak, Mary Cecilia Jackson’s devastating but hopeful YA debut is about a ballerina who finds the courage to confront the abuse that haunts her past and threatens her future.

There are two kinds of people on the planet. Hunters and prey

I thought I would be safe after my mother died. I thought I could stop searching for new places to hide. But you can’t escape what you are, what you’ve always been.
My name is Savannah Darcy Rose.
And I am still prey.

Though Savannah Rose—“Sparrow” to her friends and family—is a gifted ballerina, her real talent is keeping secrets. Schooled in silence by her long-dead mother, Sparrow has always believed that her lifelong creed—“I’m not the kind of girl who tells”—will make her just like everyone else: Normal. Happy. Safe.

But in the aftermath of a brutal assault by her seemingly perfect boyfriend Tristan, Sparrow must finally find the courage to confront the ghosts of her past, or lose herself forever….

My Review ~

I could barely finish this one and after so much build up and anticipation. I wanted Sparrow to be a story of forbidden love, drama, family mystery, intrigue, and ballet. I wanted Savannah to find herself through her one true love...dance. I wanted the music to speak to her soul. Her boyfriend to be so enamoring and charismatic that his abusive habits come out of left field leaving Savannah so at a lost that she, the strong and talented Sparrow, could be gaslit by another man. This story was all talk no execution. I wanted to like it. I really did, but it was both boring and intriguing all at once. Boring because well...it was boring. Intriguing because I kept waiting for interesting things to happen...but they never did. Taking us right back to boring. Sorry. I think one thing that would have benefited this story is if we saw the growth of some characters and the gradual and plausible descent of others. We needed realistic narrative progression from past to present. No skipping ahead and no concealing backstories.

My @BookishFirst #BookReview for #YourOneAndOnly by @AdrianneFinlay ✨✨✨✨✨ #WritingCommunity #ReadingCommunity #TheBoysAreComingHome

My BookishFirst review of Your One & Only!

Genre: YA/SciFi

Blurb: Jack is a walking fossil. The only human among a sea of clones. It’s been hundreds of years since humanity died off in the slow plague, leaving the clones behind to carry on human existence. Over time they’ve perfected their genes, moving further away from the imperfections of humanity. But if they really are perfect, why did they create Jack?

While Jack longs for acceptance, Althea-310 struggles with the feeling that she’s different from her sisters. Her fascination with Jack doesn’t help. As Althea and Jack’s connection grows stronger, so does the threat to their lives. What will happen if they do the unthinkable and fall in love?

My Review ~

With the idea of cloning we probably think that it has all been done before and even done to death, but Your One and Only takes the trope into a whole new direction. Touching on everything from the science and social consequences and effects from widespread cloning methods and the emotional side effects as we follow the main characters (including “living fossil” Jack one of very few genetic, natural born humans) through his journey as a target of enemies and the half of a whole. Jack’s mere existence in this story brings up several questions about what a society of clones would result in. He is special in the sea of clones, but he is also a liability to the new world order. All humans are a liability at this point as we are the flawed imperfect ones and our clones the ideal persons. Jack is all of us in a future where clones are key. This story offered an interesting and exciting perspective and journey! I would definitely recommend!

✨✨✨✨✨
